materials newsletter / january 08

We love materials.

Happy New Year. And welcome to our second monthly newsletter highlighting eight of the materials we have recently discovered. Selection is always difficult as we, at SCIN, have so much to choose from material wise. However, our plan is to present a monthly selection for interior, exterior, sustainable sources and one that is simply ‘out there’ in terms of its potential and embryonic nature.

January is a brilliant month for us. We have shows to attend and chances to rekindle some of the relationships we have with our plethora of fellow material lovers and scientists.

We’re revved up to find  the latest, help promote ‘rock and roll’ sustainable and continue to delight in finding materials that both wow the end user and client and make heroes out of the Architects and Designers. We are very happy to find the background and remain your secret. We still haven’t been stumped with a material conundrum. Give us a call if you have one.

Soft Gems: Interior
Fine artist and materials experimentalist, Fabrice Covelli has developed soft gems, a beautiful, highly tactile material created from a number of colourful urethane soft demi spherical and more globular pads resplendent like large droplets. The colour and translucence give them a gem like quality that you want to reach out and touch. Be jewelled and playful…

Kirei Board: Sustainable
The by-product of the Chinese Food Industry, this is a natural eye catching striated fibrous ‘wood’ material with honey, cream and brown tones suitable for worktops, panels and display. Nothing needs to be applied to enhance the product only to protect it s innate beauty…

Alpaca Wool Rug: Sustainable
A wonderful and truly luxurious white or honey toned wool rug from the Alpaca, a curious looking creature. The fibres are hollow and fill with air so refuse to flatten and the natural oil in the skin used to create the rugs repel dirt. Not only that but they are produced in limited numbers and contribute to the economies of village communities. Hard to put down and certainly hard to resist removing your shoes…

English Wych Elm : Interior
Supporting British woodland species is an admiral ambition and the pale tones of this particular wood that comes from the borders, works well in our Island’s natural light. Simple and delightful in the home and commercial environments…..

Bronze Chainmail: Interior and Exterior
Glamourous edginess. This metal material has come along way from its predecessors incarnation as protective clothing. It folds and drapes like curtaining yet is robust enough for wetrooms and landscape applications…

Light Tape: Interior and Exterior
This cold light source is an electro luminescent laminated between thin clear plastic sheeting to produce evenly diffused light for accent illumination less than 3mm thick. Use it down the side of a building, behind a glass shelf or behind a translucent panel. No need for light boxes and it is powered on the equivalent of  2 AA batteries yet lasts for 1000’s of hours without significantly dimming down….

White Uni: Interior
This is one white flooring you will not shy away from. This Commercial quality cushioned vinyl flooring has a  leathered surface and will delight all practically minded minimal styled aesthetes. It can even be used on walls….

Fabric Formed Concrete: ‘Out there’
Simplicity is key to quality and these innovators are able to create complex free-form shapes in concrete using technical textiles to create the formwork to cast the concrete in. The concrete, like an eager child will take on the relief and even absorb colour from the material with incredible effects….
